This Combat Role is mainly support-oriented, and focuses on healing, reviving and resupplying the other members of Intelligence Squad Alpha. The Medic carries the supplies required to keep his teammates in fighting shape. The Marksman carries a modified version of the powerful LS70 rifle with explosive rounds, allowing him to take out multiple enemies with a single shot before they become a threat to other teammates. The Marksman Combat Role is equipped for medium and long range encounters which makes him ideal to scout for enemy movement. The Assault wields a modified version of the LS36 Breacher shotgun, which enables him to quickly disperse enemies that have broken through Intelligence Squad Alpha's defenses. The Assault Combat Role specializes in close-quarters combat. At certain points, the Helghast will call on special Helghast champions with unique abilities, based on key characters from the single-player campaign: Echo, Vladko Tyran, and Commander Saric. They will switch up tactics and angles of attack when they capture an Uplink, forcing players to adapt their defense strategy accordingly. ĪI-controlled Helghast enemies have their own sets of goals and Combat Roles like the members of Intelligence Squad Alpha.

If all members of the team are dead and their Team Score is too low to allow respawning, the mission ends in failure. Should an Uplink is lost to the enemy or players have to respawn after critical injury, the Team Score will incur a penalty. Players can also earn bonuses such as artillery strikes and jetpacks. The players' Team Score indicates how close they are to establishing the Hacking Uplink increasing it by defending the Uplink from Helghast capture attempts, or by "banking" the Personal Score players accumulated from kills, ability uses and recaptures. Players are tasked to keep waves of Helghast enemies at bay long enough to establish a Hacking Uplink and transmit the data to HQ. It also includes four arena maps built from elements of Shadow Fall's single-player campaign.

The mode features four player classes - Assault, Marksman, Medic or Tactician. Operating behind enemy lines, the players must relay intercepted military transmissions back to VSA headquarters through a set of captured Uplinks, while defending them from waves of Helghast troops. Players play as members of the elite VSA team known as Intelligence Squad Alpha. And although its player base has shrunk over time, Guerrilla expects it to see an influx of players with the launch of Intercept.Intercept is a 4 player online co-op game mode.
